Sculpture in India

A staggeringly rich array of monumental, energetic, even witty stone sculpture in India survives, often in the fort, palace or temple for which it was carved. At Mahabalipuram (where amazing stone-carving continues today for temples worldwide) and Badami, the monumental sculptures take your breath away. So too at Elephanta, an island in Mumbai harbour.
