Music in India

Apart from the rich folk traditions, music in India is one of the more difficult arts for a Western visitor to appreciate. Even the instruments are unfamiliar – the stringed sitar and smaller sarod, the zither-like santoor, the oboe-like shahnai, the tabla drums. For the best, try some pure southern Carnatic classical music or the Turko-Persian-influenced northern Hindustani music. Louise’s tip: start with the lighter and poetic Hindu thumris or Islamic ghazals and qawwalis.
