India’s four million Jains tend to live in the west, near their sacred hills such a Palitana, to which regular pilgrimage is required. As with Buddhism, Jainism in India has its roots in a 6th century BC religious reformer who achieved spiritual knowledge; this one became a jina (conqueror), his followers Jains. Ahimsa (reverence for all life) is a fundamental belief, as is a strict code of behaviour and self-discipline – all of which influenced the Hindu leader, Mahatma Gandhi.
