Buddhism in India
India has just 8 million Buddhists, and yet this is the land where the Buddha lived. Buddhism in India began in the 6th century BC, when a prince who renounced his privilege received bodhi (enlightenment) at Bodh Gaya, south of Patna, and became The Buddha (Awakened One). His theory: life’s overwhelming problem was desire; its solution was The Middle Way (moderation) and dharma (faith). From India, Buddhism spread north and south. In India, Buddhism flourished until the 7th century, when it lost out to reformed Hinduism. Today, India’s grandest Buddhist remains are at Sanchi, near Bhopal; see also Mumbai and nearby. |
